The Nordic office of Amref Health Africa is looking to expand our board and election committee with new talent. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a Norwegian/Danish individual who is passionate about Amref Health Africas mission to create lasting health change in Africa, and who is willing and able to contribute to our work. Are you the right person?
The current board has an international composition, with experienced NGO leaders from Ethiopia, Kenya, Sweden, the Netherlands and Italy. We are now specifically looking for a Norwegian and Danish Board Member, as we aspire to expand our presence in the Norwegian and Danish context within the next few years. S/he will bring country specific context and perspective to the Board, and a valuable understanding of culture, frameworks and regulations within which Amref can operate.
We are also looking for individuals who would like to be part of our election committee.
About AMREF
Amref Nordic/Amref Flying Doctors is the Stockholm-based and Nordic office of Amref Health Africa (AHA). AHA is headquartered in Kenya and is the largest Africa-based healthcare international Non-Governmental organization (INGO). We are currently running programs in 35 countries in Africa with more than 60 years of experience
and engagement with governments, communities and partners to increase sustainable health access in Africa. Amref Health Africa also incorporates program development, fundraising, partnership, advocacy, monitoring and evaluation, and has offices in Europe and North America as well as subsidiaries; Amref Flying Doctors, Amref Enterprises and the Amref International University. Amref Nordic has more than 25 000 donors with a majority in Sweden and a limited number in Norway. The Board has a future ambition to expand operations in Norway and to initiate activities in Denmark. As part of this new strategic focus, we are looking to expand the board with two members from Norway/Denmark.
Board Member Position
The Board is supporting the work of Amref Nordic and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance to ensure maximum impact for our cause. While day-to-day operations are led by the Amref Nordic Director (ND), the Board-ND relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected
Board Member responsibilities include:
Leadership and governance
- Ensuring that the Board operates within AHA objectives, provides a clear strategic direction for our work in the Nordics and that decisions are taken in the best, long-term interests of Amref Health Africa.
- Ensuring sound financial health of the foundation, with systems in place to ensure financial accountability.
- Regularly reviewing major risks and opportunities and ensuring that systems are in place to manage and mitigate risks.
- Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as she develops and implements Amref Nordic’s strategic plan
- Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board meetings as well as participating actively and efficiently in meetings
- Approving Amref Nordic’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
- Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO
- Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.
- Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments.
- Representing Amref Nordic to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
Board terms/participation
Amref Nordic’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment. Board meetings will be held quarterly and mostly digitally. In addition to that we will have one annual strategic F2F meeting.
Qualifications
This is an extraordinary opportunity for a Norwegian/Danish individual who is passionate about Amref Health Africas mission and who is willing and able to contribute to our work. We value heterogentity and are looking for the following profile to complement the existing board.
Knowledge and skills
- Broad knowledge and understanding of the Civil Society sector and current issues affecting it.
- Extensive professional experience and accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the non-profit sector
- Significant experience in an area relevant to growth in Fundraising, Organizational development and/or Marketing/Communications/Advocacy
- Broad understanding of charity finance and governance issues in either Norway or Denmark
- Fluent in both English and Norwegian/Danish
Personal qualities
- Demonstrate a passion and strong commitment to Amref Health Africa’s values, vision and strategic objective, preferably based on experience.
- Culturally sensitive, with knowledge and understanding of Africa and the development context
- Diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
- Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and a forward-leaning attitude to pursue innovative solutions and approaches.
- Strategic thinking and decision-making skills
- Willingness to be hands-on when necessary
- Ability to work effectively in diverse and heterogeneous teams

The work of an election committee is crucial for the success in identifying individuals who can contribute in a constructive way in our future boards. We are looking for individuals who:
- Demonstrate a passion and strong commitment to Amref Health Africa’s values, vision and strategic objective, preferably based on experience.
- Have or are able to explore a wide network
- Have a thorough understanding of the context in which Amref is operating and can understand the competencies that would strengthen our work
- Ability to assess potential candidates and present them to our organisation.
We would prefer to have members from different Nordic countries and would strive to have a group with three members on a rotational term. We are in the process of reviewing our guidelines for the election committee, so please get in contact with us if you want further information.

Participate in strategic start up-days
The 11-12th sept Amref Nordic is planning strategic startup days in Stockholm, when it would be ideal for the new board members to be introduced and participate.
This Board Member position and election committee positions are not being remunerated, but travel and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties will be covered.
